What is the difference between WS and WSS?

• WS (WebSocket): data traffic is in plaintext, without encryption or server authentication. This means that communication can be intercepted and manipulated.

• WSS (WebSocket Secure): data traffic travels via TLS encryption. This is the secure and internationally accepted standard for OCPP communications.

Why is WSS mandatory?

Since the entry into force of EU Regulation 2022/30 (elaboration of the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU), manufacturers are required to ensure that their network-connected devices:

• prevent fraud,

• protect networks from damage,

• safeguard personal data and privacy.

It follows that encrypted communication via WSS is the minimum security standard.

Do charging stations that only support WS meet European requirements?

No. Charging stations that cannot establish a WSS connection (e.g. due to outdated root certificates or limited firmware support) are not compliant with the security requirements of EU 2022/30.

• This may continue to work temporarily for devices already installed, but for new installations or re-inspections , these stations are not considered compliant.

• Without a firmware update from the manufacturer, this could lead to future phasing out.

What does this mean for Wattify users?

• Wattify currently still supports pairing of charging stations that only use WS, however, we wish to point out the dangers as mentioned above.

• Should this become more strict in the near future, we will have to follow the legislation and shut down WS completely.

• For existing installations, we recommend checking with the manufacturer to see if a firmware update with WSS support is available.

• New charging stations must always communicate via WSS to meet European safety standards and to work stably with Wattify.

Summary

Charging stations without WSS support are not future-proof and not compliant with EU regulations. We recommend that these devices be updated or replaced with models that do support WSS.
